Tortuguero National Park - This is a jungle on the Carribean side of the country. It is hot and humid, and primarily at sea level. The only modes of transportation in and around the park ar by boat, through the many canals and rivers, and by air, to the one airstrip at Tortuguero village. Look here for Tiger Herons, Boat-billed Herons and many waders from the north. Green Macaws are making something of comeback here as the wild almond trees recover from over-harvesting, in the past.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park - This is the protected park lands below and surrounding the volcano. It is intermediate elevation forest and an environment distinct from the cloud forests of the interior and the jungles of the Carribean slope. My favorite bird in this location is the Long-tailed Manakin.
Palo Verde National Park - is an important wetland and overwintering grounds for many migrants from the north. Here may be found huge concentrations of waterfowl and wading birds and also many endemic species. It is one location to find Scarlet Macaws, Roseate Spoonbills, Wood Storks, Great Currasow and other interesting fowl. The Tempisque River runs through the park and a trip to Isla de Pajaros is well worth the effort. Playa Panama (Panama Beach) pictures are located in this area as well. PP is located on the pacific coast of Costa Rica and it's climate is hot and arid, and very reminiscent of central California.
Monteverde/Santa Elena Cloud Forest - These cloud forest preserves are high elevation forests with relatively cool temperatures but high humiity due to the constant presence of clouds. Monteverde and Santa Elenea are home to many unique endemic species. The Resplendent Quetzal is found here. It's main food source is the wild avocado, so that is where to look for the birds. Many tourist attractions here put out hummingbird feeders which draw a wide array of stunning hummers in huge numbers.
Animals of Costa Rica - These pictures are from all over Costa Rica, including the jungles, the cloud forests, the rivers and canals, mountains, and etc. Hope you enjoy them.
