Mark Catesby (1683-1749), an Englishman, made his inaugural voyage to the shores of America in 1712, where he remained for seven years. Upon returning to England he was pursuaded to undertake a second journey to the colonies with a more explicit purpose of recording the flora and fauna of this enchanting new land. In 1729, Catesby's The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands was published to great acclaim. Besides being a monumental work of art, this was the first comprehensive color plate book of American flora and fauna, both marine and terrestrial. Individual plates from this work, and later editions, command thousands of dollars apiece.
With this in mind, collectors have sought images from the Beehive limited edition collection of Natural History Catesby prints. Printed in 1974 by the Beehive Press, Savannah, Georgia, these prints are exceptionally well done. Printed on 'laid' paper and presented in individual folios containing the corresponding text, publication was limited to only 500 copies. The plates are reproduced from the Boston Athenaeum copy of Catesby's work (1771, or 3d edition) and reproduced on the same saize as the original plates. Design and printing by Stinehour Press, Lunenburg, Vermont with facsimiles by the Meriden Gravure Company, Meriden Connecticut.
